Candelaria Baltazar didn't plan on being admitted to HealthPark hospital when she showed up ther... Nine babies born in thick o
It all started unexpectedly at the Germain Arena emergency shelter Sunday, where Baltazar, husband Pascual Vicente and their two children hoped to ride out the storm.
Shelter security guards had another idea. Since Baltazar was nine months pregnant and experiencing some labor pains, she was told she had to seek refuge elsewhere.
"She couldn't stay there," said Vicente, a carpenter. "They asked when she was due, and I said the 22nd of this month. They said, 'You have to go to a hospital.' "
With no ambulance or escort, Vicente recruited his uncle to drive him and his wife, as well as their daughter, Shayla, 7, and son, Jackson, 5, to HealthPark hospital in south Fort Myers.
Rauen said the nurses teased Baltazar to name her new daughter after the storm. Wilma was an option, and so was Willamena, nurses said, but in the end the family made their own call.
Sara Dyer, head of the obstetrics division at HealthPark, said nine babies, seven boys and two girls, were born there between midnight and the end of the storm.
