The rural Hurley sisters died Friday morning on their way to school when their vehicle and a pickup collided about four miles northwest of Viborg, not far from their home on Swan Lake.

Tatum was driving a 1993 Ford Escort south on 454th Avenue when the station wagon was struck by a westbound 1999 Chevrolet pickup headed west on 289th Street, Joffer said.

Around dusk, some cars slowed at the intersection to view the scene, where a headlight, broken glass and plastic were scattered about. Someone had placed a bouquet of flowers in the field entrance.
