Prosecutors say he tortured and sexually assaulted two women in different states and almost got away with both crimes. It took the courage of a Lexington County woman and an enterprising Virginia district attorney to put 35-year-old Rodney Odell Brown in prison for 15 years on assault charges.

Taylor found Brown faced similar charges in Lexington County stemming from a 2003 attack on a woman who was his girlfriend. He contacted S.C. authorities to have Brown extradited and prosecuted in Lexington County.

They did argue on July 30. Brown accused her of cheating and left the house. She said she went to sleep thinking they would work it out in the morning.

"We have the sheets where you can see on each side of her where it spilled over," said Debra Moore, an assistant solicitor for the 11th judicial circuit who prosecuted the case. "The sheets were a maroon color, so it's real obvious."

For eight hours, according to Moore and the victim, Brown choked the woman into unconsciousness and then shook her awake, only to choke her again. She said he broke a mirror across her face and used the broken glass to stab her neck. He stripped her naked and sexually assaulted her.

Around 3 a.m., she said her screams awoke her 4-year-old daughter, who came into the room, crying. The woman said Brown picked the girl up and put her on the bed, where she watched his attack on her mother.

She stayed with a friend until Aug. 4, when her home was vandalized. At the prodding of friends and family, she went to the police to press charges.

According to Taylor and the victim's written statement, on Feb. 29, 2004, Brown set her hair on fire with roach spray and a lighter. He sprayed Easy-Off oven cleaner on her face and dragged her down the stairs by her hair. He sexually assaulted her. She was eight weeks pregnant.

Her 4-year-old daughter witnessed it all. This time, Brown was arrested and charged with abduction, marital assault and two counts of malicious wounding. He faced up to life in prison, although Taylor said he couldn't prosecute the case without the victim's help.

He was charged with criminal sexual conduct in the first degree, assault and battery with intent to kill, and assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature. He agreed to plead guilty to one count of assault and battery with intent to kill with a 15-year sentence. Judge Kenneth Goode accepted that plea Feb. 13 in the 11th Circuit.

Brown's arrest record in South Carolina dates back to 1989. It includes a conviction for assault and battery with intent to kill in 1992 in Richland County.

The Lexington County victim has moved on and is engaged to another man. She's thinking of seeking counseling. She doesn't use bleach to wash her clothes.

"I couldn't let him go around thinking that ‘all these girls I'm hurting are too scared to go to the police.' You don't have the right to play God and try to take somebody's life."
